Mental health professionals who don’t believe in recovery are said to suffer from the clinician’s illusion. They often don't see those who recover, only those who relapse or stay ill.
You are a brilliant writer. I feel compelled to hear more. I, of course, am a mental health professional. I have seen a few people with Bipolar disorder eventually able to go off medicine. I have seen one person who worked at NASA who was mindful when he needed to have his medicine tweaked. Those with psychoaffective disorder, depending on the severity, can function. I am so curious about Doctor R. and his thoughts. He sounds like a psychopharmacologist, and working with medicine and other medical healing is an art and a science. I started working in mental health 40 years ago, when psychiatry was in its infancy. I feel it has now moved to toddlerhood. There is still a long way to go in truly understanding these complicated issues. Thank you so much for this fascinating peek into the story's beginning.
